What Is GPA?

GPA, the grade point average, is the standard way US schools and many others summarise academic performance in a single number on a 4.0 scale. Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points, an A being 4 and an F being 0, and courses count in proportion to their credit hours.

Because it is credit-weighted, a strong grade in a heavy four-credit course moves your GPA more than the same grade in a one-credit elective. That weighting is what separates a GPA from a plain average of your grades.

How the GPA Calculator Works

It multiplies each course grade point by its credit hours, adds those quality points, and divides by the total credits.

Formula: GPA = sum(credit x grade point) / sum(credit)

The product of credits and grade point for a course is called its quality points. Summing quality points across every course and dividing by the total credit hours gives the weighted average that is your GPA.

  1. Convert each letter grade to a grade point: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0.
  2. Multiply each grade point by that course credit hours.
  3. Add the results and divide by the total credit hours.

Plus and minus grades add a third of a point either way, such as 3.7 for an A minus or 3.3 for a B plus.

GPA Example

Take four courses: a 3-credit A, a 4-credit A, a 3-credit A minus and a 3-credit B plus. The grade points are 4, 4, 3.7 and 3.3. Quality points are 3x4 + 4x4 + 3x3.7 + 3x3.3 = 12 + 16 + 11.1 + 9.9 = 49, over 13 total credits.

Dividing gives 49 / 13 = 3.77, a magna cum laude range result. Notice the heavier 4-credit A pulls the average up more than the lighter courses.

By contrast, three equal 3-credit courses graded A, A and C give quality points of 12 + 12 + 6 = 30 over 9 credits, a GPA of about 3.33, showing how one weaker grade drags an otherwise strong set down.
