AI Calculators

An AI calculator works out the token cost, API pricing, production savings or ROI of using AI, before you commit a budget.

An AI calculator is a free tool that turns AI usage into a cost or a saving: tokens into dollars, an API into a monthly bill, or a manual task into the time and money AI replaces. AI pricing is per-token and easy to misjudge, so a dedicated tool keeps budgets honest.

This hub gathers our AI cost and productivity tools in one place. Use the token and API tools to price model usage, the media tools to cost image, video and voice work, and the ROI tools to justify the spend. For crypto tools, see the crypto calculators.

What Are the Main Types of AI Calculator?

AI calculations split into four kinds on this page. Each answers a different question.

Token and API Pricing

Token and API tools price model usage, from raw tokens to a monthly GPT-4, Claude or Vertex bill.

Media Production Costs

Media tools cost AI image, video and voice work against the human alternative.

ROI and Efficiency

ROI tools measure the time and money AI workflows save.

Career and Risk

Career tools estimate how exposed a role is to automation.

How Is AI API Cost Calculated?

AI API cost is calculated from tokens, not words. A model charges a price per million input tokens and a price per million output tokens, and roughly one token equals four characters of English.

Total cost is input tokens times the input price plus output tokens times the output price, multiplied by how many times you run the task. The token and API tools do this conversion for each provider.

Worked example. A prompt of 1,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens on a model priced at $10 per million input and $30 per million output costs $0.025 per run. Run it 10,000 times a month and the bill is about $250.

What Do the Key AI Terms Mean?

Six terms decide what AI usage costs. Each definition below states the term in one line.

Token
A token is a chunk of text a model processes, about four characters of English; pricing is per token.
Input vs Output Tokens
Input tokens are your prompt; output tokens are the reply. Output tokens usually cost more.
Context Window
A context window is the maximum tokens a model can handle in one request, prompt plus reply.
Inference
Inference is running a trained model to get a result, which is what API pricing charges for.
API Pricing
API pricing is the per-token or per-request cost a provider charges to use its model.
ROI
ROI is the return on investment, the money or time an AI tool saves against what it costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Is AI API Cost Calculated?

AI API cost is based on tokens, not words. Multiply input tokens by the input price and output tokens by the output price, then multiply by the number of runs.

How Many Tokens Is a Word?

Roughly one token equals four characters of English, so a word averages about 1.3 tokens. The AI token calculator converts your text exactly.

Why Do Output Tokens Cost More?

Output tokens cost more because generating text uses more compute than reading it. Most providers price output at two to four times the input rate.

Do These Calculators Use Live Model Prices?

No. You enter the current price per million tokens, so results stay accurate as providers change their pricing.

Do These Calculators Store My Figures?

No. Each calculator runs in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere unless you save a result, which stays on your device.
